The Big Issue

10 Aug The Big Issue

The-Big-Issue-5When a friend of mine asked me a few months ago, “would we be happy to donate some eggs to support The Big Issue lunch in August?”, of course I said yes.  But I have to be honest, I had no idea what on earth she was talking about.  All I knew was that I had to have a few boxes of eggs delivered to the Hilton Hotel kitchen sometime in the near future!  So I wrote it down and continued about my day.  As luck would have it, as the event approached, my mother’s partner’s 70th birthday celebrations were cancelled. SO as a token I said, “why don’t I take you both to the “Big Issue Lunch” at the Central Market on Sunday?! Again being honest …. I still wasn’t sure what it was all about.  Now I sit here, after the event, and I can’t even begin to tell you how delighted I am that fate allowed me to attend such an awesome, fun and liberating day.

THE BIG ISSUE – is a magazine, but not just any magazine ..I digress. The Big Lunch, is a fundraiser for the Big Issue Magazine and this special Magazine is published to raise money for the homeless and disadvantaged in South Australia. Hold on, the BIG BANG is coming…. it’s much cleverer than just that.
Once the monthly issue has been printed it is then sold by the very people it supports.  That’s right, the vendors (sellers) of the magazine are the less fortunate or homeless.  The magazine is not only raising money, it is creating jobs for the very people it is raising money for.  I think it has been well documented that having a purpose creates a feeling of self-worth and from there it is just a positive spiral upwards! So know that when you are walking along the street and you see a person selling The Big Issue magazine PLEASE STOP and buy one.  In doing so you are helping someone that is trying to help themselves!

And just one more thing….

The-Bigg-Issue-2Sometime ago I had the good fortune of listening to Richard Branson talk at an event. Amongst many other things, he said …. “If everyone could give as much as they can, even if it is small, the world would be a better place”.  At the time this resonated strongly with me as I often felt that our ‘little’ egg donations weren’t enough, still something I know, but still not enough.  With this in mind, let’s take a look at Sunday’s lunch… ‘The Big Lunch’ event was organized by a small committee that gave their TIME. The food was provided by many organizations that SPARED as much as they could. The lunch was prepared by an amazingly accomplished group of chefs and helpers that gave it their PASSION.  Some gave more than others, but it was the sheer amount of people that were prepared to give, in any shape or size, which made this event a success.  So please remember, even if what you have to GIVE is only small, it is the amount of people prepared to GIVE that makes it all!
